About Us

Mountain Shadow Trade was founded on an observation that became impossible to ignore.

Japan needs food. Brazil has it in abundance. Brazil needs technology. Japan produces it at world-class level. The two economies are complementary in ways that, once seen clearly, demand action.

Átila Lima and Vitor Galesso have known each other for over two decades. Vitor was Átila's professor at university — the beginning of a relationship that deepened when Átila later joined the Mato Grosso State Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Development as Foreign Trade Manager, where their shared interest in trade data, economics, and international development turned an academic bond into a lasting professional friendship. On Átila's birthday one year, Vitor gave him a book: Development as Freedom by Nobel laureate Amartya Sen. It was a deliberate choice — a signal that what they cared about was not just commerce, but what commerce can do for people.

In 2024, as shifts in global trade policy opened new pressures and new possibilities in the Japan–Brazil corridor, they acted. Vitor brought a verified network of over 200 organic and fair-trade certified smallholder farmers from Mato Grosso, prepared through a Sebrae-backed programme — producers ready for international markets today. Átila brought his life in Tokyo, his understanding of Japanese business culture built through years of daily immersion, and his expertise in trade data analysis developed across years of public service.

Mountain Shadow Trade is the result: a connector built on twenty years of trust, a concrete Brazilian supplier network, and the rare advantage of people who genuinely live on both sides of the deal.

Our Name

The name Mountain Shadow comes from 影山 (Kageyama) — the Japanese family name of Átila's wife, and the family that rooted him in Japan. It is a reminder that the most enduring connections begin as personal ones.

Our Mission

To connect Brazilian and Japanese businesses at the moment they are ready to trade — removing the barriers of distance, culture, and unfamiliarity so that what is complementary can finally meet.

Our Vision

To become the trusted bridge for Japan–Brazil trade, and eventually Japan–Latin America trade, known for the depth of our networks, the integrity of our introductions, and the long-term success of our clients.

Our Values

Lived Experience
We don't consult from a distance. We live in Japan. Our partner lives in Brazil. We understand both sides from the inside.

Patience
Good trade relationships are not built in a single meeting. We take the long view — and we mean it.

Integrity
We only make introductions we genuinely believe in. Our reputation is our network, and we protect both.

Human Capability
Inspired by the ideas that shaped this partnership, we believe trade is most valuable when it expands what people are able to do and become — for the companies we work with, and for the producers behind every product.

The People Behind the Bridge

Á

Átila Lima

Founder — Tokyo, Japan

Átila began his career in government, serving as Foreign Trade Manager at the Mato Grosso State Secretariat of Industry, Commerce and Development — where he developed expertise in trade data analysis and international market intelligence. He later studied International Business in Canada, adding academic grounding to his hands-on experience.

In 2019, he moved to Tokyo following his marriage to a Japanese national, building a life embedded in Japanese culture and society. His daughter attends one of Tokyo's most competitive private schools — a year-long preparation process that taught him as much about Japan as any business course could.

Átila is the link between Brazil's productive capacity and Japan's market: someone who understands both sides not from studying them, but from living them.
